Reintroduction of fiscalization in the Czech Republic

Fiscalization (EET – Elektronická evidence tržeb) had already been introduced in the Czech Republic but was later suspended. The government is currently planning to reintroduce it from 2027 under a modernized system.

Background to fiscalization (EET) in the Czech Republic

The EET system was originally introduced in the Czech Republic to electronically record sales and report them to the tax authorities. It was introduced gradually and affected different industries at different times. However, the experience gained so far forms the basis for the new framework currently being planned.

  • Phase 1: from December 1, 2016 for the HORECA segment (hotels, restaurants, cafés and petrol stations)
  • Phase 2: from March 1, 2017 for retail and wholesale
  • Phase 3: from March 1, 2018 for all other occupational groups, with the exception of freelance professions, transport, agriculture - Phase 3 was postponed indefinitely in 2018.
  • Phase 4: from June 1, 2018 for freelance professions, transportation, agricultural businesses - Phase 4 was also postponed indefinitely in 2018
  • Phase 5: The reintroduction of fiscalization (EET) has been announced for 2027, planned under a modernized framework with a focus on digital reporting of sales data.

In the previous EET system, transaction data was transmitted electronically to the tax authorities. The tax authorities confirmed receipts using a unique identification code (FIK – Fiscal Identification Code).

Companies were required to issue receipts including this code to end customers. Participation in the EET system required registration on the Czech tax authorities' EET portal.
