POS connection in Italy from 2026: digitally linking payment terminals and cash registers

Since January 1, 2026, Italian companies have been required to connect their electronic cash registers (telematic cash registers) to payment terminals. The requirement imposed by the Agenzia delle Entrate applies to all merchants and service providers that accept card payments. The Italian tax authority (Agenzia delle Entrate) has published guidelines for implementation. Digital connection via the Agenzia delle Entrate portal: procedure, deadlines, and operational obligations

No physical connection between the devices is required. Instead, companies use a simplified online platform available on the Agenzia delle Entrate portal.

1. Registration of the POS terminal with the Agenzia delle Entrate

Go to the Agenzia delle Entrate portal and link the serial number of the cash register to the payment terminal details. The system will automatically display the registered payment terminals.

2. Establish a telematic connection between the POS and the cash register

The connection is NOT physical, but telematic:

• Access the reserved area of the "Fatture e Corrispettivi" portal. 
• Register the identification code of the payment terminal and
• the serial number of the telematic recording device

It is possible to appoint an authorized intermediary to establish the connection via the "Device Accreditation and Registration" service.

3. Deadlines for POS connectivity in Italy from 2026 onwards

• For POS already active in January 2026: 45 days from availability of the online service (date to be announced)

• For new credit card terminals activated after January 31, 2026: From the 6th day of the second month after activation until the last working day of the same month.

• Example: POS activated on February 1 → Connection between April 6 and April 30

Important note: Saturdays are not considered working days for the purpose of this deadline.

Updates: Any changes (POS replacement, new connection) must be reported according to the same schedule.

4. Recording and transmission of electronic payments

At the time of sale, the cash register must accurately record each electronic payment and indicate the payment method and amount on the receipt.

Data transmission:

• The electronic payment data is transmitted daily in aggregated form to the Agenzia delle Entrate.
• The transfer is carried out in accordance with the existing procedures for telematic documents.
