Many retailers and manufacturers focus on ensuring that their day-to-day business runs smoothly. In doing so, they sometimes lose sight of legal deadlines. But right now, it is important to be vigilant.
Many hardware TSEs have a certificate that is valid for five years. Since most hardware TSEs were purchased in 2021, many systems will need to be replaced in 2026. Those who act in good time will remain compliant with the law and protect their systems from failure. This article explains what the TSE is all about, what deadlines apply, and how efsta can help you with the replacement process.
The TSE is a central element of the KassenSichV and has been ensuring the tamper-proof documentation of cash register transactions in Germany since 2020.
Hardware TSE models are valid for 5-7 years. Since numerous modules were already used in the introductory phase, many hardware TSEs will need to be replaced in 2026.
These TSEs may then no longer be used. The use of invalid TSEs is a violation of the KassenSichV and may be punished with a fine.
A cloud TSE usually handles the central renewal of your certificates, which means they remain valid for longer and need to be renewed or checked less frequently.
The German Cash Register Security Regulation (KassenSichV) stipulates that electronic cash register systems must be equipped with a technical security device (TSE).
This TSE prevents tampering with cash register records. Every business transaction is automatically logged and backed up.
The legal basis is § 146a of the German Fiscal Code. The KassenSichV has been in force since January 1, 2020.
Anyone who has used a first-generation hardware TSE should now check how long it has a valid certificate. If it is due to expire soon, a new TSE unit must be purchased.
It is up to the manufacturer to decide whether to use hardware TSE again or to switch to a cloud solution.
However, it is now undoubtedly time to plan ahead. Only those who act early can guarantee secure operations for their customers.
In the efsta portal, TSEs are listed under "Fiscal Units," each with the type, version, serial number, and validity date of that specific unit.
As an efsta partner, you can easily order a suitable TSE for your company in the Orders section of the efsta portal.
